Meet Pam Peeples!

This October marks 29 years since Pam joined the Allendale Hampton Jasper Regional Library System! In that time, she has become an integral part of this system, particularly in cataloging and material processing. But for Pam, libraries have always been a part of her story.
Growing up in Allendale County, Pam and her siblings were regular visitors to the library thanks to their mother’s deep love of books and learning. That early exposure sparked a lifelong appreciation for reading, though it was not until later that Pam realized she could turn that passion into a career! “I had always loved books and libraries, but I had never considered working in one. Once I started the job, it all just clicked,
and I knew I had found my calling.”

Pam began her journey in a cataloging and processing role, and over the years has become a key player in maintaining the AHJ Library System’s catalog, as well as contributing to the statewide SCLENDS catalog. She’s often behind the scenes, but her work touches every item that reaches the shelves, from books and DVDs to yoga mats and gardening kits! “Sometimes I look back and realize that I’ve touched nearly every item in each of our libraries, many of them more than once.” Dubbed by her first director as a “natural-born cataloger”, Pam is responsible for assigning barcodes, entering detailed records, ensuring the accuracy of MARC data, and preparing materials for patrons across all branches of the library. Essentially, Pam ensures that library patrons can easily find and check out all the items the library receives. While her job involves a significant amount of computer work, it is also surprisingly physical. She unpacks and repacks loads of materials, assists with inventories, and helps with library relocations!

Pam’s career began before library automation. “I used to type catalog cards for all our libraries. I was very excited when we transitioned to computers and became fully automated!” Since then, she’s committed herself to staying up to date through self-study, classes, and collaboration with fellow catalogers! When asked what she loves most about her work, Pam stated: “I love feeling that I might have made a real difference in someone’s life by helping make knowledge and support accessible to anyone who seeks it.” She’s especially proud to work alongside colleagues who, like her, care deeply about their communities.

Throughout her time with the AHJ Regional Library, Pam’s had her share of memorable moments! From helping with exciting summer reading programs (including “walking” a giant snake after a visit from the Snake Man!) to building sets for performances. However, one memory stands out: when her son was young, he was once asked what his mom did, and he replied, “My mom used to be an artist; now she’s a book girl.” That sentiment still holds true today.

Outside of work, Pam’s passions are just as diverse. A lifelong reader with a love of historical fiction and strong female characters, she also enjoys gardening, hiking, kayaking, painting, birdwatching, genealogy, and animal advocacy. She’s also a skilled thrift hunter and furniture refinisher, though she admits she has to “really control herself so I don’t become a hoarder.”

For nearly three decades, Pam has poured her heart, precision, and passion into the AHJ Regional Library System. Her commitment to preserving knowledge, her deep love of learning, and her tireless work behind the scenes ensure that every library experience is a little bit better for everyone.
